Enhancing Professional Development through Emotional Intelligence

What is the workshop about?
According to renowned psychologist Daniel Goleman, "At best, intelligence (IQ) contributes 20% to the factors that determine life success, which leaves 80% to other forces.” The "other forces” are the components of emotional intelligence. If we want to enhance our clients' career and life success, an understanding of emotional intelligence may be foundational.
Through a combination of mini-lecture, group discussion and hands-on exercises, participants will assess their own levels of EI, and observe first-hand how various EI competencies are illustrated in behavior. Targeted to a broad range of professionals, this workshop will:
- Provide a definition and overview of the emotional intelligence (EI) framework
- Give you the links between EI and career/life success
- Enhance your awareness of your own EI competencies
- Engage you in discussing the implications of EI for your work as a T&D professional

Who is presenting the workshop session?
Dr. Andrea Bernstein is an expert in applying emotional intelligence in the field of leadership development. She offers consulting, action learning, facilitation and coaching services all aimed at helping leaders, teams and organizations function at the highest possible level. For eight years, Andrea was Director of the State Farm California Leadership Academy, where she oversaw a leadership development curriculum for all levels. Educated in South Africa, she completed her doctorate in social work at the University of Natal in Durban.
Mike Thompson has over 25 years' training and consulting experience in the U.S. and Japan, and now serves as leadership development consultant at Kaiser Permanente. His areas of expertise are leadership development, competitive strategy, international management, and career management. His clients include State Farm, PepsiCo and Toyota. Mike earned his BS in psychology from Tulane University, and his MBA from the University of Virginia.
