Hello everyone and welcome to ASTD, Los Angeles 2010!
I am honored to serve as this year’s president and look forward to working with each and every one of you as we face the challenges and opportunities ahead. The world in which we live has changed dramatically in the past decade or two. We now live in a global community where information is only a click away and connections can be made virtually to anyone at anytime around the globe. Our members needs have changed as well. More members are in transition or need to do more with less in the workplace; Professionals new to the field have different learning needs and preferences; External Consultants and Trainers need to reassess how they provide services and build their practice; and members need to receive our services and programming in blended ways. We have and will continue to respond to those changes.
The year ahead provides us with an opportunity to reinvent ASTD-LA so that the emerging and evolving needs of our members are addressed and successfully met. The 2009 chapter member satisfaction survey along with the feedback and ideas shared at Leadership Day has been heard. We are now in the process of making plans on how to effectively implement your ideas and suggestions.
Here is just a preview on how we plan to build a strong ASTD-LA Community and meet the diverse needs of the training and development professionals in the greater Los Angeles Community.
- We will continue to develop and offer learning opportunities virtually through webinars, teleseminars, podcasts, and social networking dialogues.
- We will continue to provide strong programming that reflects the interests and meets the professional development needs (ASTD’s Core Competencies) of our current and prospective members.
- We will continue to provide opportunities for members to connect and learn from other through our Mentoring Program and Networking Events.
- We will build partnerships with Colleges and Universities so that new and upcoming professionals have an opportunity to learn experientially through training and development apprenticeships.
- Reduce rates on ALL Workshops and Professional Development programs by ten percent (10%).
- Introduce other ways to save money on membership and attendance to ASTD-LA’s events.
- Build our membership so that we continue to thrive within a diverse community of exceptional professionals. (Look for more information to come on our March Madness Membership Drive!)
We are lucky to have a group of committed, talented, enthusiastic, and innovative volunteers who comprise our Board of Directors and Leadership Teams. I truly believe we are up to the challenge to adapt and respond to the changing times. Although we have a formal Board of Directors, I do not see any distinction between those individuals and you. Everyone has something to give and something to gain from their participation in this organization. Together we can create an ASTD-LA that demonstrates how a professional learning organization can truly make a difference to its membership, our training and development profession, and the community at large.
Again, I look forward to being a part of this process and seeing everyone thrive in 2010!
With gratitude,
Julie Orlov
